We often hear women say “I want to lift weights, but I don’t want to get bulky”.
The reality is that building significant muscle doesn’t happen by accident.
Men and women can both build muscle and strength by lifting weights but men generally have more muscle building potential because they have higher testosterone levels than women. Men also tend to have more muscle mass to start with.
Building muscle requires consistent progressive resistance training and proper recovery. This is exactly the kind of programming you will find in the The PIT. Pair this with adequate protein and overall quality nutrition and you can build the muscle you are looking for.
Genetics matter too. Our genetics influence how much muscle we build, where we carry it, and how quickly we respond to training. Two people can follow the same training program and see very different results and this is completely normal.
Bottom line, women can’t accidentally become bulky by picking up some heavy weights. What so many women refer to as “toned” is actually having enough muscle to create definition and a level of body fat that allows that muscle to show.
Why build muscle at all?
As we age, building and maintaining muscle becomes very important. We naturally lose muscle and strength as we get older. This can affect mobility, balance, and metabolism. Strength training helps us maintain the ability to perform everyday activities and stay independent.
