MEET OUR SWIM INSTRUCTORS

Roxane Lyons

Roxane 600x800

Fun fact about Roxane:

I’m always trying to think of new ways to do things and as a result I’m a named inventor on 23 U.S. patents, with more pending. I bring that innovative spirit to the pool too as I try to find ways to make learning fun and engaging.

Describe your swimming background: I’ve been swimming for as long as I can remember. As a child I was always the first one in the pool on opening day and spent most of my summer days there. As a teen I was a lifeguard and competed with the summer swim team.

I took a long break from competitive swimming while I raised my family and worked at Electrolux and then State Farm. When my grandson started swimming competitively at age 8, I realized how much I missed the water and jumped back in. I started out just swimming a few laps but soon needed more competition so I joined the Central Illinois Masters Swim Team - where I compete in open water and pool competitions. My grandson is now 15 and swims year round with club and high school swim teams in Kansas City. I like to think he got his love of the water from me - I wish I had some of his speed!

I’m passionate about swimming and now that I’m retired from State Farm, I spend most of my time in or around the water - swimming and competing with Masters, training on my own, teaching lessons or watching my grandson compete.

What I like about being a swim instructor: I’m passionate about swimming and I love to see the enthusiasm of my students as they learn new swim skills. I can’t even describe how exciting it is for me to see a new swimmer discover that they can move forward in the water on their own!

I also think that it is important for everyone to learn how to swim for their own safety and I love that the training methods we use include safety skills.
