MEET OUR SWIM INSTRUCTORS

Fun fact about Marie:

I love changing into my flannel pjs after an evening swim, and I encourage all my swim club friends to adopt this cozy habit!

Describe your swimming background: I grew up on the east coast of Canada in Nova Scotia. The nearest pool was an hour away from my rural community... but the ocean was within easy walking distance. My black Lab-Shepard mix Ushy, who was a master of the dog paddle, taught me how to swim! And I took ocean swim lessons as a child from local teenagers who knew a just a little bit more about swimming than I did. I didn’t get serious about swimming until about five years ago when I joined the local US Master’s club, which is a swim club for adults. With the US Master’s club I get regular practices and coaching on stroke technique in a club atmosphere. So lots of new friends!

Specialties: I specialize in teaching adults, people who, for what ever reason, didn’t learn to swim as kids.

Favorite stroke or drill: My “fastest” (speed is relative!) stroke is the front crawl. My favorite drill is “blast off” (the wall) when you glide under water with your body in a streamline position. "Free money" I call it because it involves no effort, just good form.

I have been teaching swimming: I got certified in the US Masters Adult Learn-to-Swim program in 2017.

What I like about being a swim instructor: The pool is my happy place. I am ALWAYS in a better mood after I swim, and I want to give other people access to this reliable “reset” button. It’s also really important work from a public health perspective. Did you know that about one third of adults in the United States can’t safely swim the length of a pool? And if you don’t swim, your kids are less likely to swim. I have met so many wonderful and interesting people through being a swim instructor and teaching one-on-one you really get to know your students.

I have been at Four Seasons: Since 2019.
